The decision meant the tournament would be the only Grand Slam not to grant him a place in his 2026 retirement year, following invitations or direct entry at the other majors.
25/05/2026 Stan Wawrinka played what was described as his final French Open appearance and exited in the first round. The three-time Grand Slam champion used the occasion to bid an emotional goodbye to Roland Garros, where he had won the title in 2015 and reached the final in 2017.
19/12/2025 Stan Wawrinka announced that 2026 will be his final year on the professional tennis circuit, ending a 24-year career. He said it was time to write the final chapter of his career and planned to begin his farewell season at the United Cup in Perth on 2 January.
