Retired IAS officer U Sagayam sought protection from the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and other authorities, citing serious threats to his life after the Tamil Nadu government withdrew his security in May 2023. Sagayam, who had investigated a Rs 1 lakh crore illegal granite mining scam in 2014 and exposed a powerful mining mafia operating in Melur, Madurai district since 1990, stated he received death threats and was unable to appear in court to give evidence due to personal safety concerns.
