Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur was produced before a Varanasi court amid heavy security in connection with a defamation case registered at Chowk police station. The court remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody, with his counsel arguing that the offences carried a maximum punishment of less than seven years and therefore arrest was barred.
Amitabh Thakur was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police in connection with a decades-old alleged land fraud case related to the allotment of an industrial plot in Deoria in 1999. He was taken into custody at Shahjahanpur railway station while travelling from Lucknow to Delhi, following a complaint filed earlier in 2025.
An FIR was registered against Amitabh Thakur at Talkatora police station for allegedly abusing his position as superintendent of police in Deoria in 1999 to fraudulently secure an industrial plot in his wife's name using forged documents and false identities. The complaint alleged that multiple forged documents including application forms, affidavits, and transfer deeds were created to deceive government departments.
