Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence on May 22, 2026, effective June 30, 2026, to care for her husband Abraham Williams who was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. In her resignation letter to President Donald Trump, she stated she could not in good conscience ask him to confront this battle alone while she persisted in the demanding role. Trump commended her contributions and appointed Aaron Lukas as acting DNI, with Bill Pulte later named as acting DNI on June 2.
