Political Journey	In 1992, he made his entry into politics. He was a member of Janata Dal till 1999. He was a member of JDS from 1999 to 2005. In 1998, he became MLC for the first time from Belgaum District Local Authorities Constituency and won again in 2003. He served as a Minister of State for Textiles in the Karnataka state government from 2004 to 2005. In 2006, he joined INC. In 2008, he became MLA in the Karnataka Assembly for the first time from Yemakanmardi constituency. He was the Minister of Excise in Siddaramaiah led Karnataka government from 2013 to 2016. He was the Minister of Forest, Ecology and Environment in H. D. Kumaraswamy led Karnataka government from 2018 to 2019. He was appointed as the Working President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on 11 March 2020. In 2021, he contested the MP by-election from Belagavi (Belgaum) constituency but lost. In 2023, he became a cabinet minister in Siddaramaiah led Karnataka government. He is currently serving as the Minister of Public Works Department in Government of Karnataka. In 2023, he won the assembly election from Yemakanmardi constituency as an INC candidate and became a cabinet minister in Siddaramaiah led Karnataka government.
