Latest News about Bernd Lange
Lange, as chair of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, said recent EU-China talks held in China by Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič were a good starting point. He hopes the two sides can reach a comprehensive agreement to resolve their trade dispute by March 2027. He acknowledged that deals with China are hard to secure but said Beijing keeps its commitments once an agreement is reached.
Lange, the lead Parliament negotiator on the EU-US trade deal, rejected US pressure to fast-track the implementing legislation. He said European legislation cannot be dictated by threatening social media posts from Washington. He argued that recent US court rulings made stable European safeguards necessary.
Lange led a delegation from the International Trade Committee to the WTO Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé, Cameroon, held from 24 to 27 March 2026. The conference ended without a breakthrough on WTO reform or an extension of the digital tariffs moratorium. Lange warned that the outcome increased uncertainty for businesses and consumers.
