Bonmatí was not included among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Women's Ballon d'Or, ending her run of three straight wins as the reigning holder of the award. Her injury-hit year, which began with a fractured left fibula suffered with Spain in November 2025 and required surgery in December, was cited as the reason.

Bonmatí told ESPN that she had not yet played in the 2026-27 season because she was still dealing with pain from a broken leg. She has chosen to take a step back at the start of the season to protect her long-term career. She had returned to action in May 2026 after about five months out.
