Career

Trusted general and childhood friend of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Led the daring night attack to recapture Sinhagad Fort (formerly Kondana) from the Mughals on 4 February 1670.
Scaled the fort's steep cliffs using rope ladders and a lizard named Ghorpad to secure the ropes.
Fought and defeated Mughal commander Udaybhan Rathore in single combat despite losing his shield, sustaining fatal wounds.

1. Tanaji, a renowned warrior in the Maratha Empire, was from the Malusare clan.
2. He bravely fought alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in numerous battles.
3. Tanaji's valor in the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670 A.D. is the most celebrated.
4. In 1665, Shivaji surrendered the fort of Kondana to the Mughals, greatly upsetting his mother, Rajmata Jijabai.
5. To recapture the fort, Shivaji entrusted Tanaji to lead the mission.
6. With the help of a lizard, Tanaji successfully scaled the fort despite facing Udaybhan's army in intense combat.
7. Tanaji sacrificed his life in battle, and as a tribute, Shivaji renamed the fort to Sinhagad.
