| 1. R. Sarath was born and raised in Vilakkudy in Kollam district, Kerala. |
| 2. He pursued higher studies in English Literature and Journalism and also received formal training in filmmaking and journalism. |
| 3. Before entering cinema, Sarath worked as a journalist and was associated with the Malayalam publication Kalakaumudi for several years. |
| 4. He began his career as a documentary filmmaker and also worked on short films and other visual-media projects before directing feature films. |
| 5. During his early career, he was associated with filmmaker Shaji N. Karun as an assistant. |
| 6. In 1996, while working on his documentary The Painted Epics, Sarath discovered rare mural paintings of Raja Ravi Varma at Kilunoor temple. |
| 7. His research into Kerala’s traditional mural paintings earned him a Junior Fellowship from the Government of India’s Department of Culture. |
| 8. In 2011, he directed and wrote the Indo-Chinese co-production The Desire: A Journey of a Woman starring Shilpa Shetty, Xia Yu, Anupam Kher and Jaya Prada. |
| 9. In 2012, Sarath directed Parudeesa (Paradise), which dealt with conflicts between orthodox and unorthodox religious beliefs. |
| 10. In 2014, he directed Buddhanuum Chaplinum Chirikkunnu (Buddha and Chaplin smiles), a film about Charlie Chaplin and his legacy. |
| 11. Alongside filmmaking, Sarath had a long career in the Government of Kerala’s Information and Public Relation Department, retiring as Deputy Director. |
