Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi economist, social entrepreneur, and founder of Grameen Bank, which pioneered microcredit lending to the poor without collateral.
Born in Chittagong, he studied economics at Dhaka University and earned a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1969 on a Fulbright scholarship.
After teaching briefly in the US, he returned to Bangladesh in 1972 to head the Economics Department at Chittagong University.
