Some Lesser Known Facts

Kamla Persad-Bissessar grew up in a close-knit family in Boodoo Trace, Penal, with roots dating back to Indian ancestors who were indentured laborers in the 1880s.
Her maternal great-grandmother, Sumaria, arrived in Trinidad from Madras as an indentured laborer, marrying a fellow worker named Seepersad.
Kamla's paternal grandmother, Soomintra, was pivotal in community support, founding a mandir and helping anyone who sought assistance.
While studying in the UK, Kamla worked as a social worker for the Church of England's 'Children's Society'.
She was the youngest lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mona, beginning this role at just 25 years old.
Kamla received a Fulbright Scholarship but opted to pursue law, eventually excelling as a student at Hugh Wooding Law School.
