Some Lesser Known Facts

1. Ian Cardozo was the first NDA cadet to earn both the silver and gold medals in the academy.
2. He was the first war-disabled officer of the Indian Army to command a battalion and a brigade.
3. At the age of 34, his battalion attacked the soldiers with kukris, killing about 32 soldiers of a Pakistani company.
4. Ian Cardozo took the decision to amputate his own leg after stepping on a land mine during the 1971 war.
5. He retired from the Army as the Chief of Staff of a corps in Assam.
6. Ian Cardozo is also an author and a marathon runner.
7. He was commissioned into the 5th Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) in 1958.
8. Despite his amputation, he maintained high physical fitness, beating able-bodied officers in tests and walking in snow and ice in Ladakh.
