On 23 October 2017, he joined the Indian National Congress Party.
In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, he contested from the Radhanpur constituency in Patan district and won.
On 9 April 2019, he quit the Indian National Congress.
On 18 July 2019, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In October 2019, he lost a Gujarat assembly bypoll from Radhanpur by a margin of 3500 votes.
On 8 December 2022, he won the Gandhinagar South seat with a margin of 43,064 votes in the Gujarat assembly election.

He was born in the Kshatriya Thakor community in Endla village, Ahmedabad district.
In 2011, he established the “Kshatriya Thakor Sena.”
Alpesh Thakor gained prominence in Gujarat Politics in 2014 through his campaign against illicit alcohol trade.
He received media attention for his efforts against the Patidar Reservation agitation led by Hardik Patel.
He also founded the OSS (OBC, SC, ST) Ekta Manch.
On 23 October 2017, he joined the Indian National Congress in a ceremony with Rahul Gandhi.
