Mohammad Shami

Shami made a strong red-ball return at the Duleep Trophy 2025, with coverage noting that he was regaining rhythm in domestic cricket. The performance was seen as an important step in his bid to stay relevant for future India selections.

Bengal named Shami in its 50-member probables list for the 2025-26 domestic season, signaling a push toward a red-ball and overall competitive comeback. The selection suggested he remained part of the state setup’s plans as he worked back into sustained match fitness.

After a difficult IPL 2025 season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shami drew backing from the team’s coaching staff despite a modest wicket return. His performances were viewed as below his usual standard, with analysts pointing to economy-rate concerns and a lack of consistency.

During the 2025 Champions Trophy, Shami moved past Zaheer Khan to become India’s leading wicket-taker in ICC white-ball events. The milestone added to his reputation as one of India’s most impactful bowlers in major global tournaments.

Shami’s comeback match against England did not go as planned, as he finished without a wicket and also bowled a no-ball. Reports highlighted that the outing came after a long injury break and raised fresh scrutiny over his immediate rhythm and match fitness.

Mohammed Shami returned to international cricket after a 14-month absence when he was named in India’s playing XI for the third T20I against England in Rajkot. He had last played for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and the comeback drew attention because of the long injury-related layoff.
