Political Journey	During the 70s and 80s, Erdoğan was active in Islamist circles and became a member of Necmettin Erbakan's Welfare Party. From 1994 to 1998, he served as the mayor of Istanbul until the military officers grabbed power and banned Welfare Party. In August 2001, he founded AKP (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) with ally Abdullah Gul. In the parliamentary elections 2002-03, AKP won a solid majority, and Erdoğan became the Prime Minister of Turkey. In August 2014, he became the President of Turkey after the first-ever direct elections for the head of state. Served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2014. In 2018, Erdoğan successfully pushed for constitutional reform establishing a presidential system, expanding presidential powers and abolishing the prime minister’s post.
