Combat ActionsDuring the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-48, at the Battle of Tithwal (Darapari sector) on 16 July 1948, CHM Piru Singh led Company D in an assault on heavily fortified enemy positions. Despite the company suffering 51 casualties in the first half hour, he crawled out of an occupied enemy trench and hurled grenades at the next enemy post, then jumped into another trench and bayoneted two enemy soldiers. He was fatally shot in the head while charging the third enemy bunker.
