| Nimisha Priya is an Indian nurse from Kollengode in Palakkad district, Kerala, who moved to Yemen in 2008 to pursue a nursing career. She worked in government hospitals in Sana'a and later aspired to establish her own clinic. In 2015, she partnered with Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi to open a clinic, as Yemeni law required foreign medical practitioners to have a local partner. According to her account, Mahdi subjected her to years of physical abuse, financial exploitation, and threats, forged documents to claim marriage with her, and confiscated her passport to keep her dependent on him. In 2017, while attempting to sedate Mahdi to recover her passport and flee Yemen, she administered a lethal dose of sedatives that caused his death. With the help of a local woman named Hanan, she dismembered the body and disposed of it in a water tank. She was convicted of murder in 2020, and her death sentence was upheld by Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. |
