Uma Kumaran was born to Sri Lankan Tamil refugee parents.
Her parents fled Sri Lanka during the Sri Lankan Civil War.
In an interview, Uma revealed that Labour Party MP Jeremy Corbyn helped their parents with their immigration.
She was born in East London.
Later, her family moved to Harrow, where Uma completed her schooling.
In December 2007, after completing her bachelor’s degree, Uma started her professional career with a health and care organisation, NHS Professionals.
From March 2008 to August 2010, she worked with Labour MP Dawn Butler as a parliamentary researcher and caseworker.
She has worked for the Labour Group on Islington Council from September 2010 until December 2014.
In May 2015, she worked as a senior campaign adviser for British politician Sadiq Khan for five months.
In October 2015, she was appointed as a political advisor by the Local Government Association (LGA), London.
From November 2017 to August 2020, she worked as a Senior Advisor to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
