His father, an atheist and a follower of the social reformer Sahodaran Ayyappan, named him Salim to avoid religious associations. He began his career through mimicry at Cochin Kalabhavan before joining Cochin Sagar. Initially, he played many minor roles and was once replaced for a role due to feedback on his acting. He spent four years performing professional drama at Arathi Theatres in Kochi.
