The two Sikh men were assaulted by a mob of Congress supporters on November 1, 1984, doused with petrol, and burnt alive. Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment for leading and inciting the violent mob, with 14 eyewitnesses testifying against him for his active role in the assault.
