He later formed the Gandhi Group of Students Union (GGSU), which gained immense popularity with over 300,000 student affiliations across universities and colleges in Punjab and Chandigarh. Initially viewed as a helpful and humble figure in his village, he eventually became embroiled in violent conflicts that led to multiple criminal cases including murder, assault, and possession of illegal weapons, ultimately culminating in his kidnapping and murder on September 5, 2003.

1. Rupinder was named 'Rupinder Gandhi' by his father due to his birth date coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.
2. He excelled both academically and athletically during his school years, participating in national level football events.
3. Despite his violent reputation, Rupinder was known for his charitable acts, including facilitating marriages for girls in his village and providing education to less privileged children.
4. He unexpectedly became the Sarpanch of his village at the young age of 22.
