Puri was reported as a possible contender for Speaker of the Michigan House if Democrats win back control in the 3 November 2026 elections. Coverage describes him as seeking to become the first Indian-American Speaker of the state House. The outcome depends on Democrats flipping the chamber from Republican control.

Puri responded after Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed nine bills that the House Speaker had withheld, following a Michigan Supreme Court decision that left in place a lower court ruling requiring the Speaker to submit them. As Democratic Leader, he issued a statement on the outcome.
