Jhalkari Bai was a Dalit warrior and trusted advisor to Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Born in 1830 to a farmer's family in the Dalit community, she rose from a low-ranking soldier to become the head of the Durga Dal, the women's brigade of the Jhansi army. She was renowned for her exceptional martial skills, including archery, sword-fighting, horseback riding, and marksmanship. Jhalkari Bai played a crucial strategic role in the rebellion, most notably by disguising herself as Rani Lakshmi Bai to deceive the British forces and allow the queen to escape danger. She died on 4 April 1858 while defending her queen and fighting against the British.
