Hariharan is the son of renowned Carnatic vocalists Shrimati Alamelu and H.A.S. Mani.
He began learning Indian Classical music from his father.
During his teenage years, he found inspiration in Mehdi Hassan.
In 1977, he emerged as the winner of the 'All India Sur Singaar Competition'.
Hariharan made his entry into the Tamil Film Industry in 1992.
He co-founded the band 'Colonial Cousins' with Lesle Lewis in 1996.
His children, Akshay Hariharan and Lavanya Hariharan, are also accomplished playback singers.
