He served as chairman of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint during the Flint water crisis from 2014 to 2019, focusing on children affected by lead exposure. In 2016, he was appointed chairman of the AMA Council, serving until 2017. In 2017 and 2021, he was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees. His advocacy for patients and organized medicine has been a lifelong endeavor. He was elected to the board of trustees of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, beginning service on 1 January 2022.
