Justice Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan is a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India, elevated directly from the Bar on 19 May 2023.
He is the tenth advocate in Indian history to be directly appointed as a Supreme Court judge.
He graduated with first rank from Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University, as part of the first batch of the five-year law course (1983-1988).
He is set to retire on 25 May 2031 and is in line to become Chief Justice of India from 12 August 2030 to 25 May 2031.

Career

Enrolled as an Advocate on the roll of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 28 October 1988 and transferred to the Bar Council of Delhi.
Worked in the chambers of late K.A. Ramachandran, a leading criminal lawyer in Coimbatore, during college (1983-1988).
Joined chambers of C.S. Vaidyanathan, Senior Advocate, from November 1988 to October 1990.
Worked as junior under Senior Advocates C.S. Vaidyanathan and K.K. Venugopal (1988-1995).
Designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court on 28 April 2009.
Appointed Additional Solicitor General of India on 26 August 2013, held till May 2014.
