Latest News about Haakon VIII (King of Norway)
King Haakon took part in Norway's annual TV-aksjonen fundraising campaign by going door to door on Kvitsøy in Rogaland with a collection bucket. He served as patron of this year's campaign, which supports the Norwegian Refugee Council's work with displaced people. The Royal Court said the funds will go toward shelters, homes, legal aid and water projects in several conflict-affected regions.
King Haakon made his first official trip as king to Narvik, the site of the first major Allied victory over Nazi Germany in 1940. During the visit he addressed a crowd and thanked people for sharing the royal family's grief after the death of King Harald V. He also visited the Narvik Centre museum and the Ofoten fire station before continuing on to Finnmark.
King Haakon delivered his first remarks as Norway's new monarch following the death of his father, King Harald V. He paid tribute to his father as a loving parent and dedicated ruler, and the country entered a period of national mourning.
King Harald V of Norway died in Oslo at the age of 89, ending a reign of 35 years. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, succeeded him immediately as King Haakon VIII under Norway's rules of succession.
