The Supreme Court asked the Centre to decide by 18 March 2025 on the mercy petition linked to Balwant Singh Rajoana’s death sentence in the Beant Singh assassination case. The bench said that if the government does not act by then, it will hear the matter on merits. The court was considering his plea seeking commutation of the death sentence because of the long delay in deciding the petition.

The Supreme Court also noted that it had earlier refused to commute Rajoana’s death penalty in 2023, but agreed in 2024 to re-examine the issue afresh. It then adjourned the matter to 18 March 2025 after directing the Centre to take a final call.
