John Owen Brennan is an American intelligence officer who served as the 23rd Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from March 2013 to January 2017. He was the first CIA director to rise through the agency's ranks since Robert M. Gates. Prior to his role as CIA Director, he served as Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2013. Brennan has a long career in intelligence, including roles as Chief of Station in Saudi Arabia and Chief of Staff to CIA Director George Tenet.
