Some Lesser Known Facts

1. Sitaram Yechury was born in a Telugu family in Madras and did schooling mostly in Andhra Pradesh.
2. He moved to Delhi after the Telangana agitation in 1969 and completed his higher studies there.
3. In his school days, he was influenced by the Communist movement.
4. Yechury attained the All-India first rank in the CBSE Examination.
5. In 1974, he became a member of the Student Federation of India.
6. During college, he was a sportsperson and excelled in playing lawn tennis; he even represented his university in the sport.
7. In 1975, he was imprisoned for dissenting against the Internal Emergency and elected as the President of JNU’s Student Union.
8. By 1978, Yechury became the All-India Joint Secretary of SFI and later its President before leaving in 1986.
