Born into a Bengali family in Lucknow, she became known for her versatile supporting roles across Hindi, Gujarati, and Malayalam cinema. Despite her Bengali background, she achieved significant success in Gujarati films and was revered in that industry. She graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1973 and made her film debut in 1968 with Teri Talash Mein. In her later career, she transitioned primarily to television, where she found greater scope for women-centric roles and became particularly celebrated for her grandmother and mother characters.
