She serves as the Acharya Mahamandaleshwar or Chief of Kinnar Akhara to promote Hinduism and support the LGBTQ+ community.
She comes from an orthodox Brahmin family background.
In 1998, she made the decision to live as a Hijra.
Tripathi established the 'DAI'M Welfare Society' in 2002 and the 'Astitiva Trust' in 2007.
In 2014, she filed a petition to legally acknowledge the third gender in India.
She extended her support to Ashok Row Kavi in challenging section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.
She was honored with the title 'Indian of the Year' in 2017.
